Are you having problems to fall asleep? Try a good night drink. Which beverages act like a natural falling asleep remedy and which should be avoided?
Milk and honey
Milk and milk products contain sleep enhancing tryptophan. This makes milk a perfect good night drink. When adding some sweetener (e.g. honey) to the milk the body can easier absorb the tryptophan. Bananas, too, contain tryptophan. When mixing milk and banana the drink also might serve as dinner. There are other sleep enhancing ingredients like cinnamon, for example. Cinnamon supports production of the sleeping hormone melatonin. So, enjoying warm milk with a dash of cinnamon is supporting sleep, as well. Furthermore, walnuts are a source of easily absorbable melatonin, too. Cardamom is a calming and balancing spice and therefore is good for falling asleep. Shortly boil a cardamom capsule with some milk. But do without cacao – cacao contains the stimulants theobromine and caffeine.
Tea
Different types of tea like valerian, hops, melissa and lavender support falling asleep. Please do without black or green tea in the evening. Due to their caffeine-content they are a stimulant.
Sour cherry juice
Did you know that cherries contain melatonin? This makes sour cherry juice a perfect falling asleep remedy as well as a perfect substitute for milk or tea, if you don’t like to drink these two or are allergic to one or another.
Coffee and wine
Due to its caffeine-content, coffee might make it hard to fall asleep. Since caffeine might remain in your body up to six hours watch closely the drinking time of your last coffee of the day. There is nothing to say against a glass of red wine before going to bed. But be careful: large quantities of alcohol impair sleeping quality!
