A wrongly packed or too heavy schoolbag often leads to pain in the back. Back musculature strengthening exercises easily prevent from these complaints. After pediatric orthopaedics Prof. Robert Rödl, University Clinic Münster, Germany, lack of exercise is one of the main reasons why children take a poor posture – their musculature simply is too weak. According to a study of the “Deutsche Angestellten Krankenkasse (DAK)” (German health insurance) back pain with children increases. The number of children concerned massively increased the last couple of years. The complaints start at the age of enrolment and especially occur in the age from eleven to 14.
The study has been conducted by the Forsa-Institut on behalf of the DAK. About half of the 100 questioned pediatricians stated that a rise in back pain of pupils is noticeable. 13 % even stated that back pain massively increased. According to the doctors the main reason is that the children do too few sport and exercise in their free time. And, by contrast, their media consumption is too high. Also, a lack of support of movement as well as of the motoric development can be responsible for that. The appeal is directed to the parents to increase support of these developments. Further factors are insufficient physical education in schools and a wrong diet.
