When it comes to well-being and overall health, the hormone melatonin has developed itself during the last twenty years to one of the most important endogenous protecting- and sleeping hormones, from the scientific point of view. Here a summary, why melatonin is so important for us human beings:
• Melatonin is produced from serotonin.
• Melatonin regulates the sleep-wake-dream-rhythm.
• Melatonin is needed for falling asleep and sleeping through.
• Melatonin is important for the immune system and protects from cancer, heart attack and aging.
• Melatonin is a protective substance for our brain and nerve cells.
• Melatonin is intercepting free radicals (antioxidant).
• Melatonin is the best anti-aging-agent (youth-hormone).
• Melatonin is lowering the blood lipid level.
• Melatonin regulates appetite (leptin is inhibited).
• Melatonin inhibits clumping of the blood platelets.
• Melatonin protects heart and circulatory system (arteriosclerosis).
• Melatonin prevents from dementia and memory loss.
• Melatonin protects the body from effects of electromagnetic pollution and from toxins.
• Melatonin improves mood (precursor of serotonin).
Since melatonin is produced in the pineal gland, science is more and more interested in the fact that disturbances or a decline of the activity of the pineal gland is having effects on the health as well as on the aging process. Meanwhile there are clear indications that too less melatonin might be connected with degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, dementia or Parkinson’s. Re-activation of the activity of the pineal gland already showed positive results in the treatment of these disturbances. A further outcome is that a well- functioning pineal gland is responsible for the sense of empathy. This is having an effect on the development of the consciousness of the person as well as on his personal relationships.
