Does this sound familiar? You get up in the morning, your neck hurts, your throat has a stiff feeling, and your shoulders are tense. Almost certainly, you are sleeping on the wrong pillow. Depending on your sleeping position, your pillow has to fulfill different criteria.
How to find a proper pillow
At first, it is advisable to determine the preferred sleeping position. In what position do you fall asleep? At your side, your back or your stomach? Also, ask your bed neighbor. We all change our sleeping position during the night. Therefore, your pillow should adapt to different demands during the night.
In the second step, check the adaptability and supportive ability of your pillow. Very often, the cervical spine is placed improperly on the pillow. Most of the time, the pillow is too high or too low. The height of your pillow depends on your preferred sleeping position as well as on the width of your shoulders, especially when you are a lateral sleeper. But, independent whether you are sleeping on your side, back or stomach – one thing has to be avoided: the bend in the neck. Our cervical spine is very sensitive. Even the slightest bit of on orthopedically improper positioning is felt in the morning. Also, never let your shoulders rest on the pillow. Ideally, they only touch the side of the pillow.
Hygiene
Did you know, that a bed might contain up to one million dust mites? They prefer a humid-warm bedding climate. During night, we are sweating and hence are losing fluids. Especially in the head- and neck-area. This humidity gets into the pillow. The materials used in the pillow are playing an essential role, so take a closer look at your pillow. How is it filled? Does it feel moist or even wet? Remember, you are lying with your head on your pillow night by night. But, you are not only losing fluids but possibly also are breathing in toxins like for example solvents. In any case, resort to natural materials. The unique characteristic of sheep wool to absorb humidity up to 30 % of its own weight makes it a very good filling. Due to the resulting dry-warm bedding climate, the dust mites are deprived their livelihood. Also, sheep wool emits a pleasant smell.
