Meanwhile, the initial situation is more than clear: about 40 % of the civilization is complaining of “non-restful sleep”, further 40 % are already having manifested, chronical sleep disturbances. During the last centuries, sleep medics have discovered about 90 different forms of sleep disturbances. Actually, there are countless reasons and causes for bad sleep. But, most of them are really “homemade”, because the increasing sleeping problems have a lot to do with our houses and apartments. Already 30 years ago, the founder of the modern building-, living- and sleep-biology Dr. Hubert Palm –- who by the way is one of my most important teachers—has pointed out that presumably electromagnetic fields are amongst the biggest disturbing factors of sleep! Unfortunately, he should be right like electro-biology science nowadays shows.
During the last five centuries, people more and more withdrew themselves into buildings. We are living in houses and apartments, we mainly work in buildings and more and more often we relocate our sport activities into fitness-centers. Of course, there is an interaction between human beings and buildings.
Building biology is dealing with this topic empirically scientific; it is the science of healthy building, living and sleeping. In this connection there are clear requirements to our living- and bedrooms, their furnishing and mechanization. Here, it is also about internal as well as external disturbance factors on our sleeping places and the biologically, orthopaedically and bedding climatically often insufficient sleeping underlays.
That means, often bad sleep and sleep disturbances are simply “homemade”. In total, for health building-, living- and sleep biology has set a wise regulation considering limits and tolerances: just the simple danger of a possible health disturbing influence is enough to avoid this influence! And this especially in our bedrooms and on our sleeping places.
