Medical students of the Thomas-Jefferson-University, Philadelphia, PA, spent sleepless nights. For hours, they were looking into coloured light –- once red light, once blue light, once green light. Their blood was controlled for melatonin, before and after doing so. The aim of their nighttime-lightshow was to doubtlessly find out which ranges of the light spectrum has an influence on the hormone production of the body. The result: especially blue light suppresses melatonin. Red and yellow light are harmless.
Studies showed that in the evening 10 to 20 minutes of bright light in the bathroom are sufficient to awaken us and to suppress melatonin production. Especially energy-saving-lamps and LED-screens have a high share on blue light.
