Tension headaches belong to the most common headaches. Scientifically it is not quite clear yet how they arise. Due to the termination, one might assume that the pains occur due to tense muscles. But, they often are an attendant symptom and not the trigger. Normally, tension headaches occur on both sides. Here, the pain can be differently pronounced. Possible triggers are: stress, caffeine, spinal complaints and a decreased pain threshold.
Are you suffering more than 15 days per month under tension headaches they are considered to be chronic. Is the number of days smaller it is called episodic tension headache. Headaches not necessarily have to be treated with analgesics. There are several preventive and easing measures.
7 hints against tension headaches
- Drink water: Our body needs sufficient water, especially for nutrient transportation. Lack of fluids might lead to headache. Therefore, try to drink about 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day.
- Cold: Cold might have a pain easing and blood flow stimulating effect. Dip your forearms in cold water for a couple of minutes. Or put cold washcloths on your temples and your forehead.
- Fresh air: Lack of oxygen and stuffy air can cause headache. Especially in rooms with many people (meeting and conference rooms) bad air develops quickly. Therefore, care for constant airing. Or spend your lunch break with a short walk in fresh air. Movement additionally stimulates circulation and supply of oxygen in your brain is increased.
- Avoid stress: Stress belongs to factors triggering headache. Try to avoid resp. fight stress best possible. Relaxation exercises like yoga and autogenous training might be helpful.
- Exercise regularly: Regular movement diminishes stress and activates your blood circulation. Stretch your legs in your lunch break.
- Conscious breathing: A deep and conscious breathing cares for transportation of sufficient oxygen. This prevents from headache.
- Regular sleep-wake-rhythm: A regular sleep-wake-rhythm contributes to a healthy, restful sleep. A nature-like sleeping system and a proper pillow further supports orthopedic rest. Here, the spine is supported and the muscles relaxed.
