You hear early birds and connect characteristics like diligence and efficiency. Grumpy in the mornings on the other hand are labelled as lazy. The Madrid University, Spain, was able to prove that this is a mistake.
The scientists made different tests with 1,000 teenagers regarding their biorhythm and their efficiency. The evaluation resulted in the fact that late risers amongst the test subjects showed more mental abilities which could be associated with a better job and a higher income.
Due to their more distinct characteristic of analytic, scheduled and inferential thinking they are more inventive and creative. Thus, they are better qualified in taking a leading position than an early riser. Early risers are able to bring peak performances early in the morning but in the evening they are in an energy-slump. Of the questioned teenagers, 32 % belonged to late risers (owls) and 25 % to early birds (larks). The remaining participants were classified as “normal types”. They had no special affection neither for early nor for late rising.
Further investigations prove that owls often are more successful than larks. A study of University of Southampton, GB, resulted in the fact that on an average owls have a higher income than larks and less often work in jobs that are connected with high physical work.
But still, everyday life is harder to cope for late risers. Times in the office, school starting times rather meet the needs of larks than the ones of owls. Since everyday life is going against the biorhythm (inner clock) of owls they often suffer under the so-called social jetlag. Amongst others, this might lead to sleeping problems, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases and digestion problems.
