Pains in the lower back, the so-called low-back pain, belong to the most common back pains. These not only arise due to sitting too long. Stress in everyday life, too, trigger back pain. About every third one is suffering under back pain, women more often than men. The reason often is their mental and physical double burden of family and job. Causes for pains in the lower back
About 90 % of all pains in the lower back occur due to muscular tensions. These arise because of:
- Sitting too long
- Bad office furniture
- Bad posture (i.e. hunched or hollow back)
- Relatively weak musculature
- Improper bedding content
- Hard physical labor
- Lack of exercise
- Overweight
- Stress
Depending on their stage of life, with women, following reasons can additionally be responsible for pains in the lower back:
- Menstrual pains, radiate into the region of the lumbar spine
- Higher load of the spine due to pregnancy progress
- Menopause
Pains in the lower back might also indicate a pathological change or be a symptom of an underlying disease, like:
- Herniated discs
- Lumbago
- Irritation of the sciatica nerve
- Osteoporosis
When do you have to go to the doctor?
Seek medical advice, when:
- Your mobility is restricted.
- Rotation or stretching are limited.
- Sitting, lying or walking becomes difficult.
- Conventional routine is impeded.
- Leisure activities can’t be conducted without pain.
- Pains in the lower back extend into the upper back and/or hip.
- Feelings of numbness, dizziness or constant tiredness
