There is a frequent discussion about the right time to start school in the morning. Especially during adolescence the natural sleeping rhythm becomes shifted as chronobiologists never get tired of repeating. Getting up early is easy for most kids in primary school, for teens not as much. Hence, for some time now, chronobiologists and sleep medics demand to start school later in the morning.
Early school start is especially tough for male youths
During puberty, the natural day-night-rhythm is postponed. Larks (early riser) become owls (night person). According to the German chronomedic Horst Werner Korf a phenomenon that not only but particularly affects male youths. Going to bed late inevitably leads to a lack of sleep – and this negatively affects amongst others our cognitive performance and our memory, which both are important for school performance. And possibly one reason why male youths often struggle more.
Scope examination time
The morning starting time unlikely is going to be postponed; but, schools easily can improve the performance as well as the lives of their students. According to the experts there is a certain time window where larks as well as owls have the same commitment: the perfect examination time is between ten and 10:30 a.m.
