Summertime is travel time. Many of us want to get away from everyday life and try to find some relaxation. But, no matter whether you are making holidays at the seaside or in the mountains – the first night away often lacks some kind of relaxation. Strenuous travelling, jetlag, everyday worries, unusual food and surrounding and a strange bed might deprive from sleep.
Find here some hints of sleeping expert Prof. Dr. med. h.c. Günther W. Amann-Jennson on how you are going to have a restful and healthy sleep on your holidays, as well:
- To completely attune your senses on holiday and to really let go take a relaxed evening walk before going to bed.
- A cup of herbal tea or warm milk with honey are relaxing, too.
- Avoid heavy and late dinners.
- There is nothing to say against a glass red wine. But: alcohol improves falling asleep but worsens sleeping through. So, don’t drink more than one glass.
Not only sun, good food and a calm surrounding contribute to a relaxed holiday, the proper bed, too, is very important. Often, the sleep in a strange bed is worse and less relaxed than at home. Out of this reason take a look at the mattresses, already when making the choice for your hotel (single mattress, no water beds, calm room etc.). When you have enough room in your suitcase, take your pillow with you.
After the first holiday nights, sleeping problems cease most of the time. Should problems to fall asleep remain, try to stick to your used sleep-wake-cycle. Your body is set to this rhythm and needs time to adapt to the change.
