It’s no big deal to find superfoods in the supermarket. Goji berries, Chia – the whole range of exotic superfoods is available. But, did you know that superfoods don’t have to be exotic? Because, long since, there were incredible foodstuffs from our habitat. Not only Acai berries and Matcha have health supporting ingredients. Blue berries and pumpkin seeds, just to name some, have benefits for our health, too. Amongst others, they support stress release and are helpful with sleep disturbances.
Blue berries not only taste good. They are furthermore low in calories and healthy. Besides vitamin C and folic acid, they contain iron which supports production of blood cells and cell membranes. Contained fibers have a balancing effect on the intestinal flora and care for a better digestion. Flavonoids are further important components of blue berries; they are said to prevent from cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Anthocyanins are secondary phytochemicals – so-called bioflavonoids – and belong to polyphenols. They are responsible for the blue, purple or red color of legumes and fruits. They belong the most powerful antioxidants in nature and protect our cells from damages caused by i.e. stress, UV radiation and environmental impacts. According to US studies, blue berries have an outstanding anti-stress-effect.
Sauerkraut can rightly be said to be an ancient superfood from our region. Already seafarers swore on sauerkraut. It protects from scurvy (lack of vitamin C disease). They were able to store it in barrels for months without going bad. Besides vitamin C, Sauerkraut contains vitamins A and B as well as minerals. Furthermore, it is low in calories and carbs but rich in lactic acid. It is helpful for people with complaints in their nervous- and cardiovascular-system. Also, it supports stress release and is helpful with depressions.
Pumpkin seeds rank among miracle cures, per se. They contain minerals, carbo-hydrates and amino acids. Additionally, they are rich in vitamin B, C, D, E and K. Furthermore, they provide healthy fats and oils. Besides their anti-inflammatory characteristic they strengthen bones and contribute to lowering the cholesterol They can be used for prevention and treatment of complaints of the prostate gland and for strengthening the cardiovascular system. Also, they contain tryptophan that enhances production of the sleeping hormone melatonin and therewith supports sleep. Best enjoy pumpkin seeds raw or as cold pressed oil, cooking destroys useful characteristics.
