The eyes are stinging, the nose is itching and stuffy, you are longing for sleep and relaxation. But, this often is not that easy. Some small hints that are easy to put into practice support restful sleep in spite of hay fever.
Nutrition
Especially for allergic sufferers it is important to pay attention to the histamine content of their nutrition. Due to the physical immune response on the proteins of the pollen histamine (responsible for the symptoms) is released. Supply your body only with a limited amount of histamine-containing food like nuts, cheese, smoked things, tomatoes, wheat and so on. It is advisable to eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables since they only contain few histamine. Quinoa, amaranth, spelt and oatmeal are a perfect substitute for wheat. The minerals magnesium, zinc and selenium are positively influencing the histamine level. Especially walnuts contain a lot of magnesium as well as the sleep enhancing amino acid tryptophan and therefore are a healthy and “hay-fever-disturbing” snack – compatibility provided!
Drinking of a lot of fresh water is important and helpful. This keeps the mucous membranes moist and they are able to effectively protect from bacteria and viruses.
Alcohol, coffee and black tea are generally disturbing falling asleep and/or sleeping through, in case you are suffering under hay fever you should consume them as few as possible. Coffee and black tea are not only containing caffeine but also a lot of histamine; alcohol releases histamine.
Change clothing and take a shower
It is advisable to change “pollen-contaminated” clothing when coming home. Don’t store it in the bedroom better ban them on the balcony or terrace.
Especially in times when you are especially allergic to the existing pollen it is advisable to wash your hair every night. Here, a lot of pollen are deposited.
Pollen filters
Fresh air and a comfortable room climate are essential for good sleep. Unfortunately, not only fresh air is entering an open window but also numerous, hay fever inducing pollen. A close meshed pollen filter is caring for relief. Positive side effect of the pollen filter: annoying mosquitos or flies don’t stand a chance to enter the bedroom and to disturb your well-deserved sleep.
