Melatonin is an endogenous hormone that is produced in the pineal gland. It is a known fact that melatonin is a sleeping- and protective-hormone but it is less known that melatonin is one of the most effective antioxidants as well. A study from Tulane University, New Orleans, revealed how big the influence of melatonin on diseases like cancer may be.
Preconditions
The scientists noticed that cancer-cells grow especially fast when it is not completely dark while sleeping. By the way: complete darkness is one of the preconditions for melatonin-production, as well. Another, indirect precondition, is the production of serotonin during the day. Not only important for melatonin but also for a working inner clock. The studies made clear that already dim-light is interrupting melatonin production -– and the melatonin level which is also important for fighting cancer cells decreases.
Prevention and therapy
In the examinations, rats suffering from cancer were divided into four groups: two groups slept in total darkness, two groups in dim-light like it might occur when a street lamp or a luminous advertising is “shining” into the bedroom.
The findings are very interesting: the group which slept in dim-light had a 2.6 times bigger growth of the cancer-tissue compared to the rats who slept in total darkness. Furthermore, the administered cancer-drug was completely ineffective (in this study: Tamoxifen). The melatonin level of the dim-light-group was significantly lower, only this very little light was enough to interrupt melatonin production. After receiving a melatonin-injection, the medicament was effective again. The conclusion of the scientists: melatonin seems to interrupt the growth-mechanism of cancer-cells and to make them vulnerable. Important for prevention as well as for necessary therapy.
Now – how do I reach a sufficient melatonin-level?
We strongly advise against an unauthorized intake of melatonin. For our inner clock and the functioning of the day-night-rhythm it is important that the melatonin level complies the time of the day. A thoughtless intake might severely disturb this interaction which might have a significant negative affect when suffering under cancer.
It is better and easier to provide the body all preconditions for production of melatonin resp. protect it from disturbing influences. As we already have read, the first and most important measure is complete darkness. But not only light – and here especially LED because of its high share of blue light – is inhibiting melatonin production but electromagnetic pollution, too. Even fields produced by electric devices massively decreased melatonin release.
