Especially during the cold time of the year it is important to strengthen the immune system. In public transport or spaces like offices there is a high risk of infection. In addition the dry air due to heating negatively influences our mucous membranes. They are not so well supplied with blood and therefore more prone to be affected by pathogens. Our immune system mainly is influenced by these three factors: light, exercise and sufficient rest.
The effects of light
Light in the form of UV-radiation on our skin serves as basis for vitamin D production. Vitamin D is regulating the metabolism of calcium and phosphate and therefore is important for bone structure and teeth development. In studies it was determined that the vitamin D level is influencing airways infections and is important for cancer prevention. Furthermore, light is influencing the production of serotonin.
In fall and winter it is advisable to spend at least half an hour in daylight, even on cloudy days. There are also vitamin D containing foods: i.e., herring, liver and eel, eggs, milk, butter and fungi.
The effects of exercise
Exercise activates immune cells and neurotransmitters of the immune system. But be careful! Don’t overexert yourself! This reduces body’s own defense strength and the infection risk increases. Try to keep fit with regular but moderate activity.
The effects of sufficient rest
Stress weakens our immune system. It is important to care for sufficient rest and compensation. This will be achieved by relaxation, short breaks during the day and especially by healthy and restful sleep.
Learn and use relaxation techniques like i.e., breathing exercises, yoga, meditation. This directly influences our organism. Relaxation exercises strengthen our immune system, prevent from exhaustion, are supportive with pain, high blood pressure and sleep disturbances.
