We are spending about one third of our lifetime sleeping. Sufficient sleep is essential for our development and our health. While we are sleeping, important regeneration processes take place. The metabolism becomes regulated, the immune system is strengthened and growth hormones are released. Learn here, why sufficient sleep is not only important for our body but also for our psyche:
Experiences of the day are processed
While we are asleep it seems as like our body and brain are on stand-by. But, during night our brain is very active. Experiences of the day are sorted and evaluated so that the brain is able to assimilate new things the next day. This process can’t take place during wakefulness because this would disturb stimuli processing. Processing information is also beneficial for learning. During sleep, new information are stored in the brain.
Bad feelings are processed
Does this sound familiar to you – after a sleepless night you are in a bad mood and irritated? Possibly because the negative and positive emotions are processed separately. The area responsible for processing positive feelings reacts more sensitive to lack of sleep than the area responsible for processing negative feelings. The consequence: after a night with few sleep we are more sensitive for negative memories and information. Conclusion: Healthy sleep supports getting balanced through the day. People with frequent sleep disturbances suffer much more often under depressions than people with sufficient and healthy sleep.
Sleep yourself healthy
During sleep our body releases numerous immunoactive substances. So, when we are having sufficient sleep our immune system becomes strengthened. On long term, lack of sleep might lead to diseases like high blood pressure, increased blood sugar, metabolic diseases etc. Since our body is regenerating during sleep it is absolutely normal that we are sleeping a lot while being sick.
