All human beings sleep in different positions. Most of us prefer sleeping in lateral position, some sleep on their back and some even on their stomach. Some love to lie spread-eagled, some prefer sleeping cuddled up. But, does our sleeping position have an effect on our daily life?
According to a study of the Cleveland State University, “wrong” lying may lead to damages in the vertebral spine and therefore cause back pain. However, sleeping in the proper position prevents from development of any vertebral-spine-complaints.
It turned out that the stomach- and back-position are especially harmful for our back. In this position, the natural shape of the vertebral spine gets changed and this may lead to serious damages in long-term. Furthermore, in this position, the use of an improper pillow may lead to a distension or sagging of the cervical spine -– and this may cause further damages.
The lateral position proved itself to be the most beneficial position for the spine and the back. When lying on the side, the vertebral spine is able to keep its natural S-shape. And, to optimally guarantee this, it is advisable to keep your neck straight and relieve it with the proper pillow. To avoid a distension, the pillow should not be too high.
To further support the maintenance of the natural shape of the spine it is helpful to slightly bend hip and knee. Like this, you are not only relieving your back and spine but also your sciatic nerve in the thigh, which is often responsible for pain in the back.
So, with the proper sleeping position and the proper pillow you are able to sleep more relaxed and start pain-free in your everyday life.
