A considerable time of our lives we are spending sleeping. Unfortunately, back pain can be a huge disturbance factor for a restful sleep. Often, after getting up we are feeling tensions, tiredness and exhaustion. According to some investigations, people with back pain due to nerve damages (herniated intervertebral discs, for example) have a bad sleep. But, lying in a disadvantageous position or a wrong bedding may also be the reason for back pain during the night.
The proper bedding
For healthy sleep, the perfect climate of the bed room is important. The temperature should range between 61 and 64° F. But without any doubt, the proper bed and –- even more important –- its content are essential for a restful sleep. During sleep, we are changing position about 20 to 60 times. Out of this reason, the bed should be long and wide enough.
With the use of the right mattress these movements can be lessened. A flexible, body adjusting slat frame and a point-elastically reacting overlay not only support the body properly they also minimize pressure points and therefore we don’t feel the urge for changing the position.
In a study, hotel guests were questioned about the quality of mattresses regarding sleeping quality resp. occurrence of back pain were examined. The results showed a clear connection between the quality of the mattress and the depth of the sleep.
The proper pillow
The pillow, too, is playing a decisive role when it comes to restful sleep. The use of an improper pillow may easily lead to tensions in the neck. This makes a sufficient expert consultancy important.
The proper lying position
During lying, the back, the spine and the musculature should be relieved resp. relaxed. There are different sleeping types – lateral sleepers, stomach and back sleepers.
In the prone position, the back is forming a hollow back and the head becomes overstretched. This, of course, leads to tensions in the back. A pillow, specially designed and suitable for stomach sleepers is useful here. Lying on the back and on a good mattress, the natural shape of the spine is supported. Here it is important that the pillow is neither too high nor to flat. For a healthy back, the lateral position presumably is perfect. Of course only, when the mattress and the pillow are offering support at the right places.
